Charged EVs | Hyundai partners with itselectric to deploy curbside EV chargers in New York
Pity the poor drivewayless drivers, who park their cars on the street, and have no option to install EV chargers at home. Millions of car owners around the world suffer this plight, and a viable solution needs to be simple and inexpensive.
Brooklyn-based itselectric offers “scalable and simple curbside EV charging that seamlessly integrates into neighborhoods.” The company’s chargers are designed to be compact, durable, and user-friendly, and they feature a fully detachable charging cord (the norm in Europe, but a novel idea for North America). The company’s business model includes “behind the meter” billing and revenue sharing for residential property owners—the idea is that chargers can be deployed at no cost to municipalities or to host property owners.
Now itselectric has formed a strategic partnership with Hyundai CRADLE, the automaker’s venture arm, along with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, to publicly demonstrate its charging network in a pilot program. The initial project will see six charging posts deployed at two locations—the Brooklyn Army Terminal and Steiner Studios. For two months, the chargers will be user-tested by publicly recruited local EV drivers, and the company will use the information gathered to finalize a for-market product.
“The team at Hyundai has been incredibly supportive, and we could not have envisioned a better place than Brooklyn, where it all began, to put our first chargers into the ground,” said Nathan King, CEO and co-founder of itselectric. “Our technology is specifically built for cities to ensure that every community—no matter the median income or prevalence of driveways and garages —has access to clean transportation.”
“itselectric’s modular AC charging solution brings low-cost, revenue-generating infrastructure to traditionally underserved urban communities around the country,” said Olabisi Boyle, VP, Product Planning and Mobility Strategy, Hyundai Motor North America.
